- Here's an interesting autobiography from Malala's own father. Read 'I Am Malala' along with (before or after) to get her take on their story, and the key events of the same.
Ziauddin it turns out is a warrior in his own right. I believe the West at least, many men who call themselves feminists are just practicing an academic exercise. Or, more insidiously, trying to trick and seduce enlightened women.
Not so for Mr. Yousafzai. He's a man that 'walks the walk'. In one of the most repressive patriarchal societies on Earth today, he risked much, including danger, to help tear down (peacefully) some of the norms that enslaved women in that country.
To my way of thinking, he's much more than just the dad of a Great Person. He certainly blazed the trail that she walks now, and should be as honored as much as his famous daughter.
On the other hand, it was interesting to read her story, THEIR story, through dad's eyes. Malala, seems to me, has the potential to be one of the great persons of our generation (if she's not there already). It's not often you get a parent's take on the life of such a person. - So amazing!!! This is incredible how he breaks social norms to provide a better life for his family and stand up for the rights of girls and women. A great read!!!

- Have recently finished reading the book “I Am Malala†which I highly recommend, I was delighted to have the opportunity to read about the man who instilled a love of learning, who inspired and supported his daughter, in a culture when women are second class citizens. In many ways he is even more inspirational than his daughter, he had to realise that there were inequalities in the society he lived in and to choose to change his views, whereas Malala was brought up by her parents to believe that education was her right. Malala’s book reflects her interest in politics but I found Ziauddin’s book to be an easier read, though inevitably there were overlaps in the story. The overriding impression left by this book is that of his love and pride in his wife and all three of his children.
This book is written in American English and my advanced copy did have editing issues which hopefully will be resolved prior to publication eg. sentences where all the words ran into each other and Malala’s foreword bounced constantly from past to present tense. Having said that, I still feel this was a 5* read.

All thoughts and opinions are my own. - Ever since I watched the NYT documentary about Malala Yousufzai, I had been curious about her father. He was the individual who had dared to stand against the entrenched patriarchy of his society. He had dared, not just to dream of a different future for his daughter, but to actually work for that to happen. Most of all, he had done that while living in that society and even after violence and death threats became a daily occurrence. So, I avidly picked up this book.
I was not disappointed.
In this book Mr. Yousufzai has described in simple language how he became the idealist and feminist he became - by thoughtfully observing how the women of his family (his five sisters, his mother, and his cousins) were treated and developing the empathy and courage to no longer accept the status quo.
The book also includes uniquely telling incidents from the family's life after they moved to the U.K. These are important lessons for all parents, but especially so for people who emigrate to a western society and struggle to understand their children who grow up in an entirely different world.
A must-read for anyone who cares about women's rights and about finding the courage to resist injustice. - This book can touch your life. It talks bout the power of believing in others, and about courage. It shows how change begins and ends with people that care about their communities. Great read!
