Building a Chatbot with the Microsoft Bot Framework V4

Chatbots or conversational agents are increasingly being installed in instant messaging in order to
to be as close as possible to customers or employees. Many sites or frameworks have appeared in the last few years
allowing such conversational agents to be built easily. One of the most comprehensive is
proposed by Microsoft and has just been upgraded to version 4.

The objective of this work is to build a chatbot in a way that is
iterative, incremental and pedagogical implementing all the modules proposed by Microsoft.
Each step allows a new module to be introduced to meet a new desired capacity for the built chatbot.
At the end of the final iteration, the complete architecture of a chatbot, built in Javascript (NodeJS), with the Microsoft Bot Framework in version 4
is operational. Through the following steps, the reader learns to

Set up a conversational kernel with the botbuilder module

Construct a simple command language using regular expressions

Recognize an intention expressed in natural language with LUIS using the botbuilder-ai module

Connect to a weather service in the cloud to return useful information

Construct a variety of natural language responses by implementing a natural language generation module

Sequence several interrelated questions using a conversation memory

Construct a complete welcome dialogue to capture information about the interlocutor using the botbuilder-dialogs module

Construct a graphical response using the adaptive cards framework

Deploy the bot under Azure and connect to it through the Teams messaging platform

The latest version of the chatbot is a complete and illustrated technical architecture allowing the reader to build his own chatbots.

Each step results in a complete program that is given in its entirety in the appendix in order to be able to easily retrieve it in a code editor and execute it.
