Families on Foot Urban Hikes to Backyard Treks and National Park Adventures Jennifer Pharr Davis Brew Davis 9781493026715 Books Reviews

  • It didn't seem right to sit back in a chair to read this book, so I found a comfortable rock to read my new favorite book, "families on foot" by Jennifer Pharr Davis and Brew Davis. Kellisa and I have met Jennifer a couple of times over the years from Trail Days in Damascus, VA to a presentation at REI in Jacksonville, FL. Someday we hope to share a trail together.

I didn't hesitate to submit a story with a few pictures when the call went out for submissions. I decided to share the story of Kellisa's first hike on wheels. We were thrilled that Kellisa's story was chosen for the book and honored to discuss some of Kellisa's challenges and medical history to be included in Chapter 9 Health Conditions and Special Concerns. Both Lisa and Cousin Matt (hiking partner on several trails with Kellisa spanning several states) received photo credits as an added bonus.

Jennifer and Brew definitely succeed in providing the blueprint and motivation to get families up and more importantly, out. I especially appreciate that they recognize the need for all children to experience life on the trail. Too often society overlooks the disabled population and I'm beyond proud that Kellisa can represent her "peeps" in this book.

Since I'm probably slightly biased, I will just say, go ahead and buy the book!
  • Before my brother-in-law passed away from cancer, he submitted an article and picture for the book (page 11). To see his writings after his passing, has really helped renew a love for getting outdoors. The other articles are also great at giving wonderful ideas and tips on the trail. Living in CA we have many trails - most challenging - and the book helps in giving ways to get through them and being prepared before we meet the challenge.
  • Great book with lots of family oriented articles. Espically the one my son wrote about his hike in the High Sierra with my granddaughter/
  • Bought this for my daughter and two preschool-aged grandchildren. I heard Jennifer Pharr Davis give a talk on her AT experience in 2014. She is so knowledgeable that I knew this would be a good resource, and it is. I am about 1/3 of the way through and will finish reading it before I pass it along to my daughter. Check out her website for more info.
  • Unique gift for Dad to plan weekend family fun.
  • My husband submitted a story and picture that was used. He has since passed but his words are still true about hiking with a large family. We still want to hike and we still learn about life on a hike. This book affirms and beckons our calling to be outside and take the kids. I love the set up of stories mixed with information. I noticed the recipes that I must try. The section on hiking with different life struggles was my favorite because, YES, you can hike when pregnant or disabled or whatever. Because my husband is gone but his words live on, I will certainly embrace this book as a testament of his love for the outdoors.
  • I was involved with this project (on the fringe). I submitted photos from our own family hiking adventures and one was chosen to be published, which is very cool, because this was a worthy project. I was sent an advanced copy of the book and it is chock full of great information. Jennifer Pharr Davis and Brew Davis cover all the basics and get multiple contributions from others who share their tips and techniques for getting kids outdoors and having a successful trip. My wife and I are very experienced at trekking with our 10-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter, but even we can learn from this offering from the American Hiking Society. The photography and layout are also fantastic. I like how many of the images were sourced from other family photographers.
